Russian President Vladimir Putin stated on Tuesday that Europe had “excluded itself” from the ongoing negotiation process between Moscow and Washington, asserting that European governments continue to obstruct current U.S. efforts to reach a peaceful settlement.
Speaking in Moscow during a session with journalists, Putin said European leaders “still cling to the illusion” of achieving a strategic defeat against Russia — an idea he insists has long failed. He added that Europe not only withdrew from political dialogue with Moscow, but is now attempting to hinder President Donald Trump’s peace initiatives.
“They refused negotiations themselves, and now they are obstructing President Trump,” Putin said, accusing European states of having “no peace agenda” and of aligning themselves with the logic of war by proposing conditions they know Russia will never accept.
Addressing recent warnings from Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó about a possible Europe–Russia war by 2030, Putin clarified that Moscow has no intention of entering a conflict with Europe. However, he struck a stark tone:
“If Europe decides to start a war with us, we are ready right now… Events might escalate very quickly, and this would not be like Ukraine.”
Putin stressed that any full-scale confrontation with Europe could evolve so rapidly that “there would be simply no one left to negotiate with.”
On the maritime attacks near Türkiye’s coast, Putin accused Ukrainian forces of “crossing into piracy,” claiming they previously targeted Russian seaports. Russia’s response, he said, has focused on vessels delivering weapons and military equipment to Ukraine.
He warned that Moscow will expand its strikes against Ukrainian port infrastructure and ships heading into Ukrainian harbors. Putin added that Russia may consider retaliatory measures against vessels belonging to countries assisting Ukraine — and did not rule out the most extreme option:
“Cutting Ukraine off from the sea entirely.”
Putin concluded by expressing hope that the Ukrainian leadership and its supporters would reconsider the consequences of their actions
