On the evening of November 24, 2025, Chinese President Xi Jinping held a phone conversation with U.S. President Donald J. Trump, marking a significant moment in the ongoing efforts to stabilize and enhance relations between the world’s two largest economies.
President Xi highlighted the successful meeting in Busan last month, noting that both sides reached several important common understandings that helped “recalibrate the course of the giant ship of China–U.S. relations.” He emphasized that the relationship has since maintained a steady and positive trajectory, a development welcomed not only by both nations but also by the international community.
Xi reiterated that experience has repeatedly proven a simple truth: cooperation benefits both sides, while confrontation harms both. He stated that China and the United States should continue moving forward “in the right direction on the basis of equality, respect, and mutual benefit,” expanding areas of cooperation and reducing sources of tension for the benefit of their peoples and the world.
Taiwan Question
President Xi underscored China’s principled position on the Taiwan question, stressing that Taiwan’s return to China is an integral part of the post-World War II international order. He recalled that China and the United States fought side by side against fascism and militarism, saying it is increasingly important for both sides to jointly uphold the victory of WWII in light of current developments.
Trump’s Remarks
President Trump described Xi as “a great leader” and said he greatly valued their meeting in Busan. Trump affirmed that the United States and China are implementing all elements of the agreements reached there. He acknowledged China’s major contribution to the victory in WWII and reiterated that the United States understands the importance of the Taiwan issue to China.
Ukraine Crisis
The two leaders also exchanged views on the ongoing Ukraine crisis. President Xi reaffirmed China’s support for all efforts conducive to peace and expressed hope that the various parties would narrow differences and reach a fair, lasting, and binding peace agreement soon, addressing the crisis at its root.
