The Merck Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Merck KGaA Germany, announced the allocation of 925 specialized scholarships for doctors from 52 countries across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The scholarships cover postgraduate diplomas, master’s degrees, and fellowships in Preventive Cardiovascular Medicine, Cardiology, Diabetes, Endocrinology, Clinical Nutrition, and Obesity & Weight Management, in addition to a short master course in Diabetes delivered in multiple languages.
This brings the total number of scholarships provided by Merck Foundation to over 2400 in 44 critical and underserved medical specialties.
Senator Dr. Rasha Kelej, CEO of Merck Foundation, emphasized: “At Merck Foundation, we mark World Heart Day every day by continuously investing in building healthcare capacity and expanding access to quality and equitable care in Cardiology, Hypertension, and Diabetes.
Through our partnerships with African and Asian First Ladies, Ministries of Health, and Medical Societies, we are creating a robust network of specialists reaching beyond major cities into rural areas.”
Beyond medical training, Merck Foundation has launched impactful community awareness programs, including children’s storybooks and animation films such as “Mark’s Pressure” and “Sugar Free Jude”, aimed at raising awareness about the prevention and early detection of Hypertension and Diabetes, while promoting healthy lifestyles among children and youth.
According to the World Heart Federation, cardiovascular diseases are the second leading cause of death in Sub-Saharan Africa, claiming over one million lives annually, with high blood pressure responsible for more than half of these deaths.
To reinforce its mission, Merck Foundation has also announced its 2025 Awards for Media, Fashion Designers, Filmmakers, and Musicians across Africa, encouraging creative works that deliver strong messages on diabetes and hypertension awareness.
The submission deadline is October 30, 2025.
