Canada’s new Prime Minister Mark Carney has arrived in Washington ahead of his high-stakes meeting Tuesday with Trump, who has revived talk of Canada becoming the 51st state.
Carney will meet with U.S. and Canadian business leaders at a function Monday evening before having lunch and a bilateral meeting with Trump on Tuesday. He hopes to ease tensions in the trade war that has created economic uncertainty on both sides of the border after Trump increased tariffs.
Carney’s Liberal Party scored a stunning comeback victory last month in a vote widely seen as a rebuke of Trump, whose trade war and attacks on Canadian sovereignty outraged voters.
