As global demand for critical minerals is projected to triple by 2030, African nations are accelerating efforts to align mining policies, enhance infrastructure sharing, and strengthen regional partnerships to unlock an estimated $8.6 trillion in untapped mineral resources.
Against this backdrop, Africa Mining Week (AMW) 2026, scheduled for October 14–16 in Cape Town, will host a high-level Ministerial Forum titled:
“Regional Policy Alignment: Mining Code Reforms to Unlock Value.”
The forum will bring together African mining ministers, policymakers, and global investors to explore how coordinated regulatory frameworks can facilitate cross-border mineral trade and support local beneficiation strategies across the continent.
Reforms Driving Regional Integration
Despite vast resources, intra-African trade accounts for just 16% of the continent’s total trade, prompting governments to adopt reforms aimed at strengthening regional integration.
In Namibia, a new Mining Code is being finalized to position the country as a regional hub connecting southern African markets with global buyers.
Nangula Frienda Ithete emphasized Namibia’s alignment with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and global trends.
Similarly, Ghana is leveraging AfCFTA to boost trade and investment, including a partnership with Rand Refinery to enhance local gold processing and value addition.
According to Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, Africa’s integration represents a strategic economic vision requiring harmonized legal frameworks to unlock growth potential.
Meanwhile, Nigeria is advancing its mining sector by reopening over 2,000 mines and promoting regional cooperation through initiatives such as the African Mining Vision. Henry Alake highlighted the importance of cross-border investment flows and regional industrial corridors.
Efforts are also underway in South Sudan, which is collaborating with South Africa to accelerate geomapping and mineral exploration as part of economic diversification strategies.
AMW 2026 is expected to serve as a key platform for showcasing Africa’s mining investment opportunities while fostering collaboration among governments, investors, and industry stakeholders.
With increasing global demand for critical minerals essential to energy transition and advanced technologies, Africa is positioning itself as a central player in the future of the global mining industry.
