Sweden’s Ambassador to Cairo, Dag Julin Dennefelt, praised the growing level of relations between Sweden and Egypt, saying, “For me, the strategic partnership between Egypt and the European Union is an Egyptian-Swedish partnership, because Sweden is an active member of the European Union.”
In an interview with Egyptian Radio, the Swedish Ambassador to Cairo affirmed that Sweden is proud of Egypt’s friendship and the leadership of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, who is keen to enhance cooperation and strengthen relations between the two governments to serve the interests of both countries. He praised Egypt’s achievements in development, economic support, agriculture, transportation, and manufacturing projects, which constitute a miracle of optimal resource utilization, something we recognize in our European countries.
He explained that there are numerous Swedish investments in Egypt in the healthcare sector, such as the Gamma Knife project at Nasser Institute and hospital development projects. He also noted that there is significant cooperation in clean energy, green hydrogen, and electricity transmission across the Mediterranean with Saudi Arabia. He noted that the renowned Swedish company Volvo is investing in the Egyptian bus industry and exports them to Europe and Britain
Regarding Swedish tourism in Egypt, Ambassador Denfelt said that it has witnessed significant progress, particularly with the modern road network that enables tourism to move quickly between the Red Sea coast, Cairo, and Upper Egypt. He noted that he enjoyed a trip last week by car to Aswan “on the silk roads.”
Regarding Swedish investments in Egypt, he explained that some Swedish companies are present in Egypt, such as Ericsson, which has been present since 1897, and
ABB.
Regarding Egyptian-Swedish relations, the Swedish ambassador to Cairo said that they have been friendly and partnered for many years. A Swedish consulate has existed in Alexandria since the 19th century, and an embassy was established in Cairo in 1922.
Historically, the Swedish ambassador to Egypt told a funny story that King Gustav, the father of the current king, met his future wife, Princess Victoria, at a reception at Abdeen Palace. At that time, he was the crown prince and an Egyptologist leading an exploration mission in Egypt.
The Swedish ambassador emphasized that one of the most prestigious and internationally renowned faculties of Egyptian archaeology is located at Uppsala University in Sweden, and that this cooperation with specialized Egyptian universities and research centers continues to this day. He added that the entire world, including the Swedish people, awaits the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum on the third of next month.
The Swedish Ambassador to Cairo, Dag Jolin Dennefelt, is a distinguished diplomat with two master’s degrees, one in law and the other in European law. He has served as Sweden’s ambassador to Malaysia and Saudi Arabia and has served his country in its embassies in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran and Israel.
During the interview, he also spoke about his country’s economic experience and how it compensated for the lack of natural resources by focusing on building human health and education, adopting a wise policy to preserve the environment, meeting the demands of the people, caring for the citizen, and achieving equality between men and women in all aspects of life, while providing opportunities for women to assume the highest positions.
