Cape Town Prepares for African Mining Week 2026 as Draft Program Reveals Continent’s Mineral Drive

Cape Town is set to host the upcoming African Mining Week (AMW) 2026, Africa’s premier gathering of mining leaders and global partners aimed at shaping the continent’s mining future. This comes amid global economic shifts—from soaring commodity prices to intensifying geopolitical competition for resources.
Africa holds approximately 30% of the world’s critical minerals, positioning it as a key pillar for economic growth, especially as demand for energy transition metals is projected to triple by 2030. African governments are modernizing mining codes, developing industrial corridors, and investing in mineral processing to support local beneficiation, job creation, workforce development, and regional markets.
2026 Draft Program: Unlocking Africa’s Full Mineral Value
Under the theme “Mining the Future: Unearthing Africa’s Full Mineral Value”, the three-day, multi-track agenda (14–16 October 2026) provides a platform for policymakers, global investors, project operators, technology providers, academia, and mining service companies to explore Africa’s opportunities, challenges, and long-term strategy.
Regional Cooperation and Policy Alignment
The program features the Ministerial Mining Forum, where African ministers will provide updates on regulatory reforms and regional initiatives to maximize mineral value. Discussions will focus on harmonized legal frameworks and regional cooperation to accelerate investment flows and strengthen Africa’s position in global mineral supply chains.
The agenda also reflects efforts to leverage the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to enhance cross-border mineral cooperation and trade.
“Africa’s integration is not just a political objective but a strategic economic vision… Our natural resources require coordinated policies. Isolated legal frameworks cannot fully unlock their value,” said Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, Ghana’s Minister of Lands and Natural Resources.
Nigeria’s Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Henry Alake, echoed the focus on regional cooperation and beneficiation:
“We aim to develop mineral corridors connecting resources, infrastructure, and markets across the continent… Our goal is not just to export raw materials, but to build industrial hubs that generate jobs and value.”
Connecting Global Investors with African Opportunities
Strategic roundtables and Country Focus sessions connect African jurisdictions with international partners from the U.S., Europe, the Middle East, and China, showcasing exploration opportunities and project pipelines across the mining value chain.
Meanwhile, technical workshops and the exhibition floor provide a platform for equipment manufacturers, technology providers, and engineering firms to display innovations enhancing operational performance.
By combining high-level policy dialogue, technical expertise, and investor matchmaking, AMW 2026 positions itself as a critical marketplace where Africa’s mineral potential meets global capital, technology, and strategic partnerships, shaping the next phase of growth for the continent’s mining sector.
