Samia Hassan Sworn As Tanzania’s Sixth President

Samia Suluhu Hassan sworn in on March 19 as the sixth President of the United Republic of Tanzania following the death of President John Magufuli that occurred on March 17, 2021.

Samia Hassan Suluhu, the country’s vice president, has been sworn in as the sixth president of the United Republic of Tanzania. Suluhu will serve the remaining period of the five-year term that began on November 5, 2020, with a possibility of running for another term in 2025. This follows the death of President John Magufuli on March 17, 2021. Magufuli, who had not been seen in public since February 27, 2021, reportedly died of heart complications in Dar es Salaam. In July 2015, Magufuli named Suluhu as his running mate for the 2015 general election, making her the first woman in that role in the Chama Cha Mapinduzi party’s history. CCM won the election, with Suhulu as the nation’s first woman vice president. In the 2020 election, the CCM won by a landslide and she retained her position.
