Member of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) communications team, Benjamin Gyewu-Appiah, has sparked controversy with a dramatic vow concerning the outcome of the upcoming general elections.
Speaking during a panel discussion on Original TV on November 26, he declared his readiness to set himself ablaze on live television if John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, wins the presidency.
Gyewu-Appiah, unwavering in his belief that the NPP’s candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, would emerge victorious, insisted that his promise was no mere rhetoric.
“If John Mahama wins this election, pour kerosene on me and burn me alive on live TV so Ghanaians can watch. I’m telling you this, if Mahama wins this elections, I will personally douse myself in kerosene and burn myself alive in a live coverage and I’m not joking with this,” he said.
Despite attempts by the show’s host to caution him against making such extreme statements, Gyewu-Appiah doubled down, insisting that he was a man of his word and would follow through without hesitation.
“Immediately he wins, I will sit here and burn myself to death. I always fulfill my promises and I will do it. No one will see me and try to harm me over this statement because I will fulfill my words. I will not allow someone kill me but will do so myself.”
His remarks have drawn sharp criticism, with many describing them as dangerous and irresponsible. Ghanaians are set to head to the polls on December 7, 2024, in what is expected to be a keenly contested election
