Sudan Faces World’s Worst Humanitarian Crisis as Avaaz Launches Global Fundraising Campaign

Cairo – Reda Helal

Sudan is experiencing one of the deadliest humanitarian crises in the world today. The bloody civil war, now in its second year, has claimed the lives of more than 150,000 people and displaced millions, creating the world’s largest refugee crisis. With the collapse of the healthcare system and shortages of food and medicine, children and the elderly are dying of hunger and disease in full view of an international community that has done little to intervene.

Yet, amid this bleak reality, local initiatives have emerged as a glimmer of hope. Ordinary citizens across Sudan have come together to run hundreds of community kitchens and clinics, which have become lifelines for countless families fleeing violence and starvation. These grassroots efforts, providing food, shelter, and basic medical care, have gained international recognition and were even nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for their humanitarian impact.

Community Initiatives Under Threat

Despite their importance, many of these facilities have been forced to shut down due to dwindling resources and declining support from governments and aid agencies. Relief organizations estimate that nearly 30 million Sudanese are in urgent need of assistance, warning that millions more could face famine if these initiatives collapse.

Avaaz Launches a Global Appeal

In response, the global humanitarian movement Avaaz has launched an international fundraising campaign to sustain these local efforts. The campaign focuses on:

Supporting community kitchens to provide ongoing food and basic medical care.

Equipping doctors and medical teams, supplying hospitals, and setting up field clinics to combat outbreaks such as cholera.

Backing journalists and human rights monitors to document atrocities and war crimes.

Accelerating investigations into international enablers of the conflict, exposing how certain states profit from arms supplies and escalation.

Pressuring governments to protect civilians and guarantee the delivery of humanitarian aid.

Avaaz emphasized that global solidarity is now a moral imperative, stressing that even the smallest contribution can make a difference in saving lives.

Return of the Darfur Nightmare

The crisis has revived painful memories of the Darfur genocide two decades ago, as rights groups continue to document mass killings, torture, and systematic sexual violence against civilians. Observers warn that without urgent international intervention, Sudan risks sliding back into another chapter of mass atrocities.
