President Donald Trump said that the drop in illegal border crossings into the United States since he took office is “not stopping” him from levying 25% tariffs on all Mexican and Canadian goods the US imports.
This comes as a 30-day pause on those tariffs, which Trump tied to illegal border crossings and the flow of fentanyl into the US, is set to expire on March 4.
However, speaking at his first Cabinet meeting today, Trump said those tariffs would come on April 2, the deadline his administration has set for an announcement on retaliatory tariffs for all other countries.
However, despite Trump’s comments today, the official date still specified in the executive actions remains March 4. The executive orders state that “in recognition of the steps taken” by both countries’ governments, the 25% tariffs “shall be paused and will not take effect until March 4, 2025, at 12:01 a.m. eastern time.”
There is no executive action officially declaring Trump has pushed that deadline even further to April 2.
Some context: Trump has often spoken loosely about tariff policy, throwing around different dates for implementation, varying percentages and differing products. Many times in his first term and a few times in his new term, he has promised much stricter policy and ended up negotiating lower tariffs or no tariffs at all.
The White House did not comment on the discrepancy.
