Sahar Ragab
Venezuelan National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez has accused the United States of using its so-called “counter-narcotics” operations in the Caribbean as a political pretext to justify intervention in Venezuela and gain access to the country’s vast oil resources.
Speaking at the “Sovereignty and Peace” legal conference held in Miranda State, Rodríguez argued that recent U.S. actions in the region “serve its economic interests and growing energy needs.”
He added that Washington’s strategy aims at undermining and ultimately toppling Venezuela’s legitimate government to pave the way for controlling the nation’s natural wealth.
Military Movements Near Venezuelan Waters
In recent weeks, the United States has deployed multiple warships to the Caribbean Sea near Venezuelan territorial waters under the banner of a “counter-narcotics operation.”
Since early September, U.S. forces have reportedly sunk at least 20 vessels labeled as “drug-smuggling boats” in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific, resulting in over 70 deaths.
Data Undermines Washington’s Narrative
Rodríguez noted that the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s own reports from recent years do not support the American narrative, showing that Venezuela is not the main source of narcotics entering the United States.
This discrepancy, he argued, raises serious questions about the true motives behind Washington’s expanding military presence near Venezuela’s maritime borders.
A Conflict Rooted in Years of Tension
The latest accusations come amid long-standing tensions between Caracas and Washington.
The U.S. has imposed sweeping sanctions on Venezuela’s oil sector, citing political and human-rights concerns, while the Venezuelan government maintains that the sanctions are designed to strangle its economy and take control of its natural resources.
As military activity escalates and the political rhetoric intensifies, the Caribbean region edges toward heightened instability. With oil at the heart of this geopolitical confrontation and few signs of diplomatic engagement, the standoff between the United States and Venezuela appears likely to persist.
